At the final conference of the Service-Meister project, SMEs, IT service providers, politicians and academics discussed the results of the AI project and their application.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>Bread rolls with poppy seeds, sesame or whole grains \u2013 with poppy seeds, sesame or grain \u2013 Bavarian bakeries are showing the way when it comes to using artificial intelligence effectively. Using a smartphone and an app, they analyse the returns from the branches. \u201cInstead of counting manually, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deutsche-glasfaser.de\/blog\/ki-hub-kronach-wo-kuenstliche-und-menschliche-intelligenz-zusammenarbeiten\/\">AI bread roll detector<\/a> automatically determines how the different types have sold,\u201d said Robert Falkenstein, project manager for the Bayreuth location of the SME Digital Center Handicraft at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwk-oberfranken.de\/\">HWK Upper Franconia<\/a>. Data that the bakery can then use to adapt its supply to demand. Service providers are also using AI and data to tailor their services ever more precisely to demand: \u201cIn the future, we will be able to create texts, images and campaigns in batch size 1,\u201d said Dr Iris Heilmann, Managing Owner at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palmerhargreaves.de\/\">communications agency Palmer Hargreaves.<\/a> The same goes for Industrial Service: \u201cAI helps us to maintain our laser cutting systems remotely and keep them operational,\u201d said Korbinian Wei\u00df, Manager Machine Vision at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trumpf.com\/de_DE\/\">TRUMPF<\/a>. Examples that show the role technology can play. And examples that underscore how smart tools, services and applications change processes not only in maintenance and repair \u2013 but everywhere and across the board.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Consortium solves maintenance and repair challenges with AI<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>From the skilled crafts to the service sector to industrial service \u2013 at the final conference of the AI project Service-Meister, everything revolved around the opportunities of the technology for two days. Opportunities that not only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trumpf.com\/de_DE\/\">TRUMPF<\/a>, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/de.krohne.com\/de\/\">KROHNE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuerth.de\/\">W\u00dcRTH<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open-grid-europe.com\/\">Open Grid Europe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keb.de\/\">KEB<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esw-group.eu\/\">esw GROUP<\/a> have been working on for the past three years. Together with IT partners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usu.de\/de\/\">USU Software<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/grandcentrix.net\/\">grandcentrix<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inovex.de\/de\">inovex<\/a>, the companies working together in the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/the-speedboat-projects\/\">speedboat<\/a> projects to solve maintenance and repair challenges with AI.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ai with Service-Meister: Economically viable applications give rise to new products<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Data silos, analogue machinery and proprietary software: \u201cThe reality of the SME sector also caught up with us in the project,\u201d said Hauke Timmermann. \u201cIt was important for us not to develop under laboratory conditions,\u201d said Christine Neubauer. Neubauer and Timmermann organised the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/the-consortium\/\">consortium<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eco.de\/\">eco Association<\/a> over the past three years. And both had accompanied the work from the start of the project in early 2020. The goal: an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/the-goals-of-the-service-meister-project\/\">open service ecosystem<\/a> that digitises master knowledge, thus empowering even less trained skilled workers for complex tasks and making German SMEs more successful and competitive with the help of AI. Because: \u201cThe decisive factor is always the application,\u201d said Axel Vo\u00df, Head of Division for the Development of Digital Technologies at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwk.de\/\">German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action<\/a> (BMWK), \u201cat the end of the day, we need applications that are economically viable in order to create new products.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI in Industrial Service: Recognising added value in Euros and cents<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Whether digital advisors, chatbots or augmented reality apps \u2013 it is with applications such as these are what Service-Meister wants to use to advance industrial service and Germany as an AI location. \u201cOnly 10 per cent of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in this country use AI,\u201d said Martin Lundborg, head of the accompanying research project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wik.org\/\">Mittelstand-Digital at the Scientific Institute for Infrastructure and Communication Services.<\/a> It is true that Germany is above the European average. However: \u201cCompanies are often not yet aware of what AI can bring in terms of euros and cents,\u201d said Lundborg.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI from Germany: Shaping digitalisation and not just participating<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Speed up response times, improve service quality and maintain equipment availability: \u201cThe need for AI is emerging on German shop floors,\u201d said Kristina Peneva, Senior Consultant at <a href=\"https:\/\/vdivde-it.de\/de\">VDI\/VDE Innovation + Technik<\/a>, \u201cif you don\u2019t invest in the topic in the next five to ten years, you run the risk of reality catching up with you.\u201d What matters: \u201cWe have to shape digitalisation from within Germany and not just participate in it,\u201d said Andreas Weiss, Managing Director of the eco Association. Another piece of the puzzle: \u201cOpen source and standards are the basic ingredients,\u201d said Weiss. \u201cAnd this is what will enable data-based business models to emerge in industrial services,\u201d said Alexandra Horn, Head of SME and Association Cooperation at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.din.de\/de\">German Institute for Standardisation<\/a>. After all, standards create trust and initiatives like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gxfs.eu\/de\/cee23\/\">Gaia-X are creating the sovereign data infrastructure for the digital economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI in SMEs: Having the courage to take small steps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Machine parameters, sensor values or repair reports: \u201cIn industrial services, too, the cloud is, to a certain extent, the recycling container for data,\u201d said Thomas Niessen, Managing Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trusted-cloud.de\/startseite\/\">Trusted Cloud<\/a> competence network. The same applies to the recycling economy and the data economy: \u201cThings only get going when everyone understands how they can benefit,\u201d said Dr Dominik Rohrmus, CTO at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lni40.de\/\">Labs Network Industrie 4.0.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>What the data-based service economy needs to suceed in SMEs: \u201cLess academic discussions,\u201d said Christian Pereira, COO at <a href=\"https:\/\/grandcentrix.net\/\">grandcentrix.<\/a> \u201cMore tangible practical relevance,\u201d said Dr Robert Pesch, Head of Data-Driven Solutions at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inovex.de\/de\/\">inovex<\/a>. \u201cThe right mindset,\u201d said Prof. G\u00fcnter Huhle, founder and owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corevas.de\/\">Corevas<\/a>. And: \u201cThe courage to take small steps,\u201d said Dr Nicole Wittenbrink, Consultant at VDI\/VDE Innovation + Technik, \u201cthose who go straight for the overall design with visionary power are more likely to fail.\u201d Last but not least, data needs a home: \u201cInfrastructure providers and data centres in Germany are ready for this,\u201d said Alexander Rabe, Managing Director of the eco Association.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI and society: More play, less concern<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>How ready is society is for AI? \u201cThe German population\u2019s for AI varies,\u201d said Dr Christina Schmidt-Holtmann, head of the Data Availability, Digital Sovereignty and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwk.de\/Redaktion\/DE\/Pressemitteilungen\/2021\/07\/20210713-agentur-fur-sprunginnovationen-sprind-startet-ersten-innovationswettbewerb.html\">SPRIND<\/a> unit at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), \u201cdepending on age, gender or level of education. \u201cYet AI affects every individual and every workplace,\u201d said Heilmann. A big part of the solution: \u201cA critical optimism,\u201d said Heilmann, \u201cand more playfulness.\u201d Because: \u201cIn this country, we live too often by cultivating fears,\u201d said Barbara Engels, Senior Economist at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwkoeln.de\/\">German Economic Institute (IW)<\/a>. Rabe: \u201cWe need more recommendations and fewer prohibitions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI in SMEs and mid-sized companies: Service-Meister shares results online<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>What Service-Meister now recommends to SMEs: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/understand-ai-in-technical-service-define-your-own-requirements-and-get-started\/\">Getting started with technology through our website<\/a>,\u201d Neubauer said. \u201cInterested parties can find all the information they need online, and can determine their own position in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/the-assessment\/\">assessment<\/a> and learn about the possibilities in the respective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/the-process-map\/\">service processes<\/a>.\u201d What helps even more: \u201cEducating yourself,\u201d said Timmermann, \u201cService-Meister provides the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/ai-in-technical-service-learning-teaching-training\/\">results in various freely available learning formats<\/a>.\u201d Whether in the German-language <a href=\"https:\/\/ki-campus.org\/courses\/ki-im-techservice\">e-learning course on the AI Campus<\/a> or in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medienakademie-koeln.de\/event\/dma-train-the-trainer-ki-im-technischen-service-fuer-industrie-4-0\/\">train-the-trainer programme<\/a> (also in German)- the basis of the AI training courses is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/2022-03_OSC_V16_Final.pdf\">open-source curriculum<\/a> that Service-Meister offers free of charge. \u201cTogether with our more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/associated-partners\/\">70 associated partners<\/a> and chambers of industry, commerce and handicrafts, we now want to take the results into the field,\u201d said Neubauer.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Future with AI: Competence network to continue the work of Service-Meister<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>\u201cAgile ecosystems like Service-Meister are doing today what large industrial conglomerates did yesterday,\u201d Lundborg said. \u201cIn the process, Service-Meister has become a real brand name in the last three years,\u201d said Timmermann. The consortium would like to build on this, for example by continuing the work as a competence network. So, yes: \u201cAdmittedly, AI only solves the problem of skilled workers at the company level, not at the level of society as a whole,\u201d says Engels. \u201cAnd AI is not a panacea, but always just a tool that enables new products and services,\u201d said Dr J\u00fcrgen Grotepass, Chief Strategy Officer Manufacturing, European Standardisation &amp; Industry Development at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huawei.com\/de\/\">Huawei<\/a>. But one thing is certain: \u201cThose who only work with AI when they consider their solutions to be mature have already missed the boat,\u201d said Weiss. The right attitude for progress: \u201cStart-up culture in action,\u201d said journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vonbusse.com\/\">Alexa von Busse<\/a>, who moderated the event: \u201cA large industrial consortium can obviously solve its challenges in the same agile way as small companies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Impressionen.gif\" alt=\"Impressions\" class=\"wp-image-5020\" width=\"1080\" height=\"720\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Impressions of Service-Meister\u2019s Final Conference<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eco.de\/presse\/service-meister-setzt-sich-im-ki-innovationswettbewerb-des-bmwi-durch\/\">Service-Meister was the winner of the German federal government\u2019s AI innovation competition at the end of 2019<\/a>.
