While SMEs are ahead in this respect, they are falling behind when data comes into the business. According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwkoeln.de\/en\/studies\/datenbewirtschaftung-von-unternehmen-in-deutschland.html\">study by the Cologne Institute for Economic Research<\/a> (IW Cologne), the local data economy is hardly picking up speed. Firstly, because the ability to manage data efficiently is not widespread among companies and on the other hand, companies see \u201cdata more as a tool for internal optimisation and not as a source of revenue\u201d. For many, it is \u201ccurrently not obvious how they can integrate the use of data into their business model\u201d, Barbara Engels and Jan B\u00fcchel from IW Cologne state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make digital services the core of your own offering: \u201cSMEs by no means lack the data basis for this,\u201d said Dr Fred Jopp, AI specialist from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pass-consulting.com\/en\/\">PASS Consulting Group<\/a>, \u201cbut they do lack know-how.\u201d Knowledge such as that developed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/the-consortium\/\">Service-Meister consortium<\/a> for industrial service with artificial intelligence (AI). Jopp and other experts now classified the results of the AI project in a panel discussion at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cloudexpoeurope.de\/en\">Cloud Expo Europe Frankfurt<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Prepare data and use it economically<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven more conservative and traditional machine builders have digitalised their processes and are optimising procedures with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/2020\/04\/29\/wartung-mit-zwilling-synchronisieren-simulieren-und-reparieren\/\">Digital Twins<\/a>\u201d, said Thomas Niessen, Managing Director of the Trusted Cloud Competence Network. \u201cHowever, companies are struggling with data-based revenue ideas,\u201d Niessen said. The fact that data does not yet generate revenue in many places is partly because it is, in a sense, an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Overburden\">overburden<\/a>: \u201cThis is a by-product that cannot be used directly in an economic way,\u201d Niessen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Handwritten serial numbers instead of barcodes, paperwork instead of digital filing or Excel lists instead of structured knowledge management systems: \u201cData is also often hardly systematised,\u201d said Stephan Boch, Senior Business Development Manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keb.co.uk\/?ppc_keyword=industrial%20waste%20heat%20recovery&amp;cHash=c88158bd378a23484928f04427e01feb&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIp6iV5tfr9wIVVe7tCh07dAQTEAAYASAAEgJxZPD_BwE?L=0\">KEB Automation<\/a>. \u201cAnd regardless of whether it\u2019s analogue or digital, companies are accumulating more and more data centrally,\u201d Jopp said, \u201cin the end, the sheer volume is hard to make sense of.\u201d What matters: \u201cCompanies need to structure data,\u201d Boch said. Jopp: \u201cLarge companies rely on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Data_steward\">data stewards<\/a> to take care of preparing information so that it can be used economically.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Platforms and ecosystems: Adapt and stay successful<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Digitise manufacturing steps to not only produce data-based but to benefit from new revenue streams: \u201cLegal issues, in particular, are slowing down business models,\u201d Niessen stated. According to the Cologne Institute for Economic Research (IW), 68 per cent of the industrial companies surveyed do not share their data for this reason \u2013 22 per cent, on the other hand, cite technical concerns. However, \u201clegal pitfalls are often more of a perceived problem,\u201d said Niessen, \u201cwhoever takes a closer look finds out that there are, indeed, good solutions to process data in a legally compliant way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/2022\/04\/12\/gio-white-paper-on-b2b-ecosystems-standardised-interoperable-and-profitable\/\">Use existing open platforms and ecosystems<\/a>,\u201d Jopp said. Take Service-Meister, for example: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/the-speedboat-projects\/\">Teams from SMEs and IT partners<\/a> have supported typical processes in maintenance and repair with AI. This has resulted in blueprints for data-based and smart solutions that the consortium is now providing to third parties for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/understand-ai-in-technical-service-define-your-own-requirements-and-get-started\/\">AI entry<\/a>. \u201cSuch best practices serve as a template for SMEs,\u201d Jopp said. Finally, it is clear that \u201cthose who adapt remain successful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Via Gaia-X confidently and safely into the service economy<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What else is needed to be successful with with data products:?\u201cDigital sovereignty,\u201d Niessen said. \u201cSo far, there is a lack of standards and technologies to regulate, for example, who is allowed to do what with which data.\u201d \u201cWith the connected data infrastructure that the <a href=\"https:\/\/gaia-x.eu\/\">Gaia-X initiative<\/a> is working on, a solution is in sight,\u201d Jopp said. \u201cIf Gaia-X succeeds in addressing legal, technological and organisational concerns, then data should also flow across the board to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/international.eco.de\/news\/data-management-with-gaia-x-betting-on-a-better-future\/\">give rise to new business models<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What that might look like, for example: If manufacturers, suppliers or service providers exchange their data in a sovereign and legally secure manner via certified Gaia-X services and nodes, then new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.servicemeister.org\/en\/2022\/04\/26\/smes-in-the-services-business-participate-and-profit-in-the-long-term\/\">business opportunities in the service economy<\/a> will also arise everywhere along the value chain. Consider, for example, the total cost of ownership: If you purchase, operate and keep available plant and machinery, this term covers all the expenses incurred in the process. User companies are looking for solutions to reduce these costs. \u201cService-based business models are the solution,\u201d said Boch, \u201cand data is the basis. Equipment can be used with less maintenance, more efficiently and with a longer service life. The reason is, \u201cthose who build plants and machines primarily to sell them fail to realise the opportunities that lie in the services business,\u201d said Boch.
